Jonathan J. Beitler, MD, MBA, FACR, FASTRO, is a board certified radiation oncologist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Beitler practices general radiation oncology and specializes in the treatment of head and neck cancer, lung cancer, and thyroid cancer. He treats patients at Winship at Emory University Hospital Midtown and Emory Proton Therapy Center.

Dr. Beitler joined the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in 2007 as professor of radiation oncology, otolaryngology, hematology and medical oncology. After his radiation oncology residency at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NY, his medical career began at the University of Maryland followed by 14 years at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. There, he held the position of residency director, vice chair and then interim chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology. He was also chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Staten Island University Hospital.

He joined the US Army Reserves as a Lieutenant in 1983 as a field surgeon. While in the Reserves he became a flight surgeon and later rose to Colonel. He is a fixed-wing IFR pilot, has a glider and float plane ratings, and also flies Angel Flight Missions. Dr. Beitler has served in Kuwait, Germany (twice), Honduras and Canada. He was transferred to the Connecticut National Guard in 2011 and was named Connecticut Army National Guard State Surgeon in 2017.

Dr. Beitler is past president of the American Radium Society, the country's oldest society devoted to interdisciplinary cancer care. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the International Honor Society Beta Gamma Sigma. He was a member of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Steering Committee on Head and Neck Cancer and was elected to Co-Chair, along a with a medical oncologist, the NCI Task force on Previously Untreated, Locally Advanced Head and Neck Cancer in 2017. He is NRG Oncology Head and Neck Cancer Core Committee Member and NRG’s Principal Investigator for Emory. Dr. Beitler was founding chair of the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Committee for Head and Neck Cancer.

Dr. Beitler is Chair of the Radiation Control Council, which is responsible for the safe use of radiation throughout all of Emory and its owned affiliates and has multiple committees reporting to it.


Dr. Beitler is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed three years of residency in general surgery at Downstate Medical Center and completed his residency in radiation oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr. Beitler also holds an MBA from Columbia University School of Business.


Dr. Beitler is a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Scholar. He was awarded the Atlanta Business Chronicle's HealthCare Heroes Award, Military Service, in 2012. He has been the recipient of numerous best doctor awards including a "Top Doctor" in Atlanta Magazine, 2010-2017. In 2019, he was named to the MilliPub Club, which recognizes current Emory faculty who have published one or more individual papers throughout their careers that have garnered more than 1,000 citations. Dr. Beitler was selected as Educator of the Year by the Radiation Oncology residents in 2012, 2014 and 2015. He is also the recipient of the Niceness Award from Maimonides Medical Center, two Service Excellence Awards from Staten Island University Hospital, Top Doctor Award (NY Metro Area, 1997, 1999-2005), two Army Achievement Medals and an Army Commendation Medal.

Dr. Beitler is the recipient of prestigious fellowships including Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 2002 and Fellow of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology in 2013. He has served as an Oral Board Examiner in Head and Neck (1997-2002, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2013) and continues to write and review questions for the Written Boards.


Dr. Beitler's area of interest is head and neck cancer. He is an institutional principal investigator (PI) for NRG Oncology and a co-PI for the National Clinical Trials Network Lead Academic Participating Site. Dr. Beitler has authored or co-authored over 100 research articles as well as nine book chapters and multiple reviews, editorials and letters to the editor. He has served as editor-in-chief of Practical Reviews in Cancer Management since 1998 and every month he and his team send oral summaries of the latest in oncologic literature all over the country. He has been a reviewer and on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics; Head & Neck; Cancer; Journal of Clinical Oncology; and American Journal of Clinical Oncology.
